INTERESTS AND EXPERIENCES IN COMPUTING

From a very early age my interests have been in the computing sector. I have always been a fan of computer games and web design. I began to experiment with web design software (such as NetObjects and Microsoft FrontPage) and progressed further when I decided to run my own live websites, including a media reviews website and a similar website which consisted of collections of funny images and videos. I have used a variety of CMS systems including Joomla and WordPress, and also practiced web design using HTML, Javascript and PHP. I also enjoy designing publications and have practiced this by making flyers and business cards for local businesses in my area, and volunteering with the Students Union. My main interests lie with Web Design, but I also enjoy gaming (particularly on Xbox, Wii or on PC in the form of MMORPGs) and creative writing (such as media and film reviews). My interests in this area influenced my decision to study a degree in Computing, and so I chose to attend NorthumbriaUniversity, where I felt I could develop and improve my ability the most.

OTHER WORK EXPERIENCE AND ACHIEVEMENTS

I have worked for South Tyneside Libraries for the past 3 years. While in this job I have gained lots of experience in the public sector, and received training in dealing with customers and in using the library computer systems. I have worked as part of a team in difficult and complicated situations, such as dealing with complaints and helping less able customers to use our service. I have been trusted with cash register duties and supervising children, young and old, when in this position.

I have also gained experience in meeting deadlines during my studies from secondary school to my degree at university. I volunteer often and have helped the Students Union at university on multiple occasions, including working open days as a tour guide for parents and potential students, representing my course. I have been a ‘Course Rep’ for two years running, gathering opinions from the students and voicing them in meetings with Course Leaders and other academics, acting as the voice of the students. My knowledge in design software has gained me the role of Media and PR rep two years running in the LGBT society, where I have designed and produced flyers and other graphics advertising the society. My volunteering is not just limited to university – I also volunteered in college. Here I wrote articles for the student magazine, ‘the Slant’, and was promoted to Editor for my final year. I also flyered for the Students Union and helped at student events, such as during elections, RAG Week and Fresher’s Week.

I always work to the best of my ability, both at home and in a working environment. I am very reliable and punctual, and spent most of my school years on the “School Council” and in the “Peer Support Group”, where I was trained important skills in communication and how to recognise certain aspects of Body Language displayed by people. I was given the role of Senior Peer Supporter and Manager of the support group as I progressed through school. Here I learned listening skills and how important this is in a working environment.

OTHER INTERESTS

I have lots of interests and hobbies, including photography, gaming, reading books (I enjoy both fiction and non-fiction) and films/TV. I enjoy computing, and have made many business cards and advertisements for local businesses. I enjoy web design and have made and published a number of small personal websites, along with those I make to support my degree. I am fond of animals and regularly donate to animal charities.
